Program details

Begin by journeying from Antigua to Panajachel, a trip through the Western Highlands region filled with quaint mountain towns, highland lakes and pine forests. Once in Panajachel, hop onto a boat to cross Lake Atitlan and visit Santiago Atitlan, where you will learn all about the local Saint Maximon. Santiago is by far one of the most popular lakeside settlements outside Panajachel, where the locals still adhere to a traditional Tz’utujil Mayan lifestyle. The local women weave and wear what are known as huipiles – elegant tunics embroidered with breath-taking colourful depictions of birds and flowers. Ancient ceremonies coexist side by side with Mayan Catholicism.

Continue then to explore Panajachel, where you will also enjoy a lunch break. This pre-Columbian town witnessed the last battle between Spaniards and their Kakchiquel allies against the local Tzujiles. The Franciscans missionaries that abounded in that age also left their mark in this region by erecting a convent nearby. At the end of the trip, you will be comfortably taken back to your hotel. This is, in short, the best way for you to dive into the region's history while getting to see the lifestyle of the Mayan people.
