This vast and beautiful river valley, where terraced vineyards and old stone cottages rise above the Douro River, is famous worldwide as the birthplace of port, but is also home to some beautiful monasteries. Uncover the role the valley has played in religious and culinary life over the centuries and the power of its traditions and faith.

Start the tour at Lamego, where we’ll visit the Shrine of Our Lady of Remedies. This granite baroque building, one of the finest of its type, rises above the city with 686 steps leading up to the entrance. Inside you’ll find gold leaf, wooden carvings, decorative tiles and many stunning stained glass windows.

A delicious local lunch is included at a local restaurant served whilst overlooking the Douro River and the terraces where the famous Port wine grapes are grown. Once you’ve digested, visit a port wine cellar in the afternoon where the world famous port is produced, and sample a glass. Head to Pinhão, one of Portugal’s best-kept secrets with its picturesque setting, old bridge and quaint, sleepy atmosphere and enjoy a stroll through the cobbled streets and soak up the ambiance.
